Day 1: Arrival Pangkalan Bun
Our team will pick you up as you arrive in Pangkalan Bun or from your hotel, where you will be transferred to the harbour and onboard our Klotok boat. Each boat is a renovated traditional Klotok, or wooden riverboat, measuring 18m by 3m, with a comfortable upper deck where you can view the rainforest as it glides by.
En-route to the Tanjung Puting National Park, we stop first at Tanjung Harapan, a rehabilitation centre for orangutans. Lunch will be served on board before you start exploring. After a short walk in the forest to the platforms, you will see the feeding time at 15.00.
Later, in the peaceful late afternoon, the boat will cruise slowly to explore the quiet river to observe the proboscis monkeys along the riverside. Enjoy delicious dinner onboard.
Day 2: Off to Camp Leakey
After delicious breakfast is served in the common area, enjoy the meal as the Klotok boat cruise the waterways in the National Park. If you're lucky, you might be able to encounter fresh-water crocodiles. While the boat cruising slowly, set your eyes on the trees as you observe the surrounding, in search for the proboscis monkey or other wildlife. A quick stop at Pesalat will take you to explore this reforestation site, where you can plant a tree in exchange for a small donation. Lunch will be served on board before you visit Camp Leakey. This famous research and information centre was established in 1971 by Dr Biruté Galdikas and former spouse Rod Brindamour. It was named after the legendary paleo-anthropologist, Louis Leakey, who was both mentor and an inspiration to Dr Galdikas as well as Drs. Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey. Originally consisting of just two huts, Camp Leakey is now an assemblage of permanent wooden structures designed to provide a base for scientists, staff, students, and Park Rangers. From the centre, set off on an easy and pretty trek through the tropical rainforest to see orangutans, birds and other rainforest animals and jungle plants. Keep an eye out for noisy gibbons, deer and wild boar. Return to the boat for dinner as the boat slowly moves to a quiet place and mooring for the night.
Day 3: Adventure in Pondok Tangguy
Once breakfast is served, enjoy the meal as the boat travels up the river, and to Pondok Tangguy, the rehabilitation centre for the ex-captive Orangutan. Arriving there just before the feeding time, you will see the orangutan on their safe haven. Afterwards, return to the boat where your journey continues downstream, this time to visit Tanjung Harapan again for the 3 pm feeding time, or you can opt for a nice trek deep into the forest.
Day 4: Full Day Trekking in Pondok Tangguy
Start in the morning for a full day trek from Pondok Tangguy, the second release site for rehabilitated Orangutans, accompanied by the ranger. On the way keep an eye out to observe wildlife through this area of secondary forest. Packed lunch in the forest. Return to the boat for dinner and overnight in a quiet location on the river.
